Leesang Galbi Donam dong Seoul Local Style Galbi and Galbitang
If you’re looking for galbi in Seoul in a more local neighborhood, Leesang Galbi in Donam-dong is a straightforward pick.
The menu is short—most people come for yangnyeom galbi and galbitang.
Donam-dong has no shortage of places to eat. That’s actually why Leesang stood out to me.
At first glance, it doesn’t try very hard to impress. No long menu, no trendy interior, no obvious tourist angle. It’s just a galbi place that locals seem to keep coming back to.
The menu is short. Really short. Most tables order the same things, and honestly, that makes the first decision easy.
Ribs on the grill. Soup on the side. Rice filling the space in between. That’s the meal.
What people usually order
Yangnyeom Galbi (양념갈비) is what you’ll see most often. The ribs are cut thick, bone still attached, and the marinade isn’t overly sweet. I was expecting something heavier, but it wasn’t. It cooks evenly and doesn’t burn as fast as some other places.
People don’t plate their own portions here. Someone cuts the ribs, someone else grabs a piece. It’s casual, a bit messy, and very normal.
Idong Galbi (이동갈비) makes sense if you want something simpler. The seasoning is light, almost minimal. No sauce to hide behind. You mostly taste the beef and the grill. Some people might find it plain. I didn’t.
Galbitang (갈비탕) comes out extremely hot. Clear broth, big ribs, still on the bone. This isn’t something you finish quickly.
You pull meat off, sip the broth, take a few bites of rice. Then repeat. By the time the bowl is empty, you’ve been sitting there longer than you planned. In a good way.
The space and the pace
The dining room feels built for sharing. Tables face each other, food stays in the middle, and no one seems rushed. There’s no course order, no “now you should eat this” moment.
It feels closer to a family meal than a restaurant experience. That might be exactly what some people want. Others might find it quiet.
Visitor notes
Ordering without Korean isn’t too stressful. The menu is short and mostly visual.Grilling help depends on the timing. During busy hours, staff usually step in.
Solo dining isn’t common for BBQ, but galbitang alone doesn’t feel out of place.
Dinner hours can get busy, though tables do turn over steadily.
Card payment worked fine.
Location
Leesang sits along Jeongneung-ro in Donam-dong. Most people come from Gil-eum Station or Hansung University Station and walk from there. Buses pass through the area often.
Parking isn’t something I’d rely on.
